PNG vs JPG: When to Convert Image Format

2026-05-13

Transparency, photos vs graphics, and file size trade-offs before you convert between PNG and JPG.

JPG is ideal for photographs; PNG suits screenshots, logos, and anything needing lossless edges.

Converting PNG with transparency to JPG fills transparent areas—usually with white—plan backgrounds accordingly.

Round-tripping JPG→PNG does not recover lost quality; keep originals for future edits.

For web, test actual byte size after conversion, not just format name.
